Commercial Auto: Auto Symbols

Auto symbols determine the type of vehicles covered by your commercial auto policy. We’ll focus on three types of auto symbols, symbol 1, symbol 2, and symbol 7.

  • Symbol 1 – 'Any Auto': This is the broadest symbol, covering any vehicle used for your business, whether owned, hired, borrowed, or otherwise.
  • Symbol 2 – 'Owned Autos Only': This covers vehicles that your business owns and is more limited than Symbol 1.
  • Symbol 7 – 'Specifically Described Autos': This symbol means only vehicles listed on your policy are covered. It requires you to 'schedule' or specifically mention each vehicle for coverage.

Consider you operate a window & glass installation business. You've recently added a new truck to your fleet but haven't scheduled it under Symbol 7 in your insurance. One day, this unscheduled truck is involved in an accident. Unfortunately, since it wasn't listed in your policy, the damages and liabilities from this accident aren't covered. This oversight could lead to substantial financial strain on your business.

In contrast, if your policy had Symbol 1, this new truck would've been covered automatically. Symbol 2 would cover the truck only if it was owned by your business.

The lesson is clear: Always ensure your vehicles are properly scheduled.
